The engineering process is a series of structured steps that engineers have to go through to design and build the product. There are a variety of different models of the engineering processes, with fewer or more steps. However, they all follow the same pattern. In this article, we will explore a 9-step design process that engineers employ to solve specific issues.

The first step in the process of engineering design is to define the problem. This is a crucial process, as failing to clearly and precisely define the issue could result in delays at a later stage in the design process. Often the solution to a specific issue will naturally appear during this step. The next phase is design synthesis, also known as design planning, and is when the specifics are formulated and a precise design of the product is made. This phase includes Gantt and Pert chart, resource loading spreadsheets and drawings, sketches and proof-of-concept models.
